Andrew Oram

My Bio Oram and Sons is a family farming business on the north side of the Pewsey Vale in Wiltshire. Six partners in the business include three generations, though my Grandfather is less involved these days than he used to be. The daily running of the farm is down to my father, Philip, my uncle, Richard, cousins Nick and James and myself. In total we farm almost 1,000 Ha., including around 200 Ha. share-farmed plus bits and pieces of rented land. We have a good range of soils over a 15 mile radius, from sand to Pewsey Vale clay and flint.

Approval for the new dairy

Now the field work is pretty much up together I have time to think a bit more about our new dairy development. Planning permission was finally granted a few weeks ago.

The old parlour is a herringbone that has been there for about 40 years and we are working with loose housing and a slurry l...

A Surprising Year

All in all things have gone fairly smoothly over the last few weeks. We finished the wheat harvest successfully in the dry period around the end of August. Worries about completing the OSR planting behind winter wheat were allayed when we got that all finished in the first 10 days of September with the one pass ...

Vision A survivor for 2013 (December 05, 2013)

Vision is a good variety that always performs and yields well. Last winter it was one of the two varieties we grew that survived the awful autumn and winter conditions so we were pleased with a yield of 3.7T on the lighter land. We have planted this again for 2014 harvest.

KWS Santiago Great after Maize (December 05, 2013)

This seems to be a great performer. We haven’t grown huge areas of it but got an average yield of 10.7T per ha which was quite impressive. It seems to do well after maize for us.

Solstice The Old Favourite (December 05, 2013)

Solstice has been an old favourite and we are growing it again next year as our main 2nd wheat but are now trying Crusoe as a possible replacement thereafter. Even though it was drilled into a very wet seedbed it did quite well this year with an average yield of 8.7T

JB Diego Our 1st Wheat Choice (December 05, 2013)

Like everything else this didn’t do too well for us back in 2012 but this year yielded 9.4T so we were pleased with that and all the early-planted 1st wheat for next season is Diego. We are hoping for higher yields from this variety in 2014.
