Did ok in a terrible year

      REVIEW:

We have had a terrible year for disease and it was also so wet in August. All of our wheats (Solstice, Relay, Santiago & Leeds) this year suffered from Fusarium & Septoria.

Nonetheless Solstice was our highest yielding wheat. We grew 80 acres of Solstice and achieved a yield of 3.9 tonnes/acre. We are happy with this yield.

This variety was drilled on 26th September 2013 on Sandy Clay loam.

Solstice is a decent milling wheat.

We haven't traditionally done very well with this variety and we have decided to retire it in favour of Skyfall..

We think this variety is a bit dated now and there are better varieties out there.

      Good solid milling wheat

      REVIEW:

Solstice was grown on 201 hectares of heavy London clay. We have grown this variety for many years now and we like it. The only problem is that it is now becoming quite an old variety and we are starting to experience disease problems with it. Keeping on top of the yellow rust is becoming a major task.

This harvest we achieved a yield of 8.4 t/ha which we are delighted with.

Solstice is a good solid milling wheat but as said earlier it is an old variety, there are lots of other (newer) varieties out there. We will be scaling back next year and moving to a more modern variety.

      Out classed

      REVIEW:

Solstice is a very consistent variety but it has now been superseded in both yield and disease resistance.
Those looking to move on from Solstice should try Skyfall, although it is still only provisional recommended most millers have said privately that they will be taking it this year.

      The Old Favourite

      REVIEW:

Solstice has been an old favourite and we are growing it again next year as our main 2nd wheat but are now trying Crusoe as a possible replacement thereafter. Even though it was drilled into a very wet seedbed it did quite well this year with an average yield of 8.7T
