My Bio Working in South Cambridgeshire, on a progressive and growing Arable and Livestock farm. Spending most of my time applying agri-chemicals with a 24 metre trailed Anglia-Knight sprayer, towed by a JCB Fasttrac. When I\\\'m not spraying I\\\'m involved in every other aspect of the farm as and when required. I am always looking to further myself and learn more about the industry I have chosen to build my career in. Also trying to increase the profile of Agriculture in the U.K. Not sure how to achieve this as yet, but have dipped my toe into a school careers event to attempt to highlight agriculture to young people who may not even know that farmers exist. Let alone that there is a whole bright and interesting industry based around it.

Winter Jobs, Open Days & Our Responsibility

So it’s come around again.... I have put off writing a blog until I received a gentle nudge reminding me that it was time again to attempt to remember what I’ve been doing since my last post. Luckily this has mostly involved completing the spray store in time for the open day with Agrii, Natural England and DEFRA. So as you...

December Update

So the time has come again to sit down and write the monthly (give or take) blog. And like some of my fellow bloggers my mind has gone blank. You wouldn’t think it was overly difficult to remember what you have done in the last few weeks, but it turns out that it is. However I think I have remembered enough to bore you all...

Touchdown Quattro Can design comes out Tops again. (November 10, 2013)

As a sprayer driver one of my most used chemicals is Glyphosate, and as we all know and I have stated in reviews previously some of the cans can be difficult to pour and empty. However Syngenta have revolutionized the pouring of 20Lt cans with Touchdown Quattro. They have added a smaller second lid which acts as an air intake to the can. Meaning that you can pour the can into the hopper within 40 seconds without a single glug or splash..... yes I know hard to believe but I promise you it's true. I have also noticed that the cans are very easy to wash out.

As for efficacy I haven't had a single problem with it's efficacy and ease of application. Lots of dead Blackgrass in the stubbles and seedbeds thats for sure.

Roundup Pro Biactive Roundup Pro Biactive No-Glug can (August 14, 2013)

Used the Roundup Pro Biactive for desiccation. Had no problems at all with tank mixing etc. It works very well and has a good kill rate and seems very effective. Chemically this product is very good. However it falls down a little when we come to talk about packaging. As usual with Glyphosate it comes in heavy to handle 20 litre cans, however on balance I understand that the can size is necessary as I wouldn't want to be pouring twice as many cans at half the size.

My biggest issue with these cans is the No-Glug feature on them, which is a hole within the neck of the can running through the handle, and works very well actually. However it creates two key issues when cleaning the cans out. The first of these is that the hole in the neck of the can has added more plastic to the neck making it longer. This means that as is usual with the Glyphosate cans from Monsanto you have to angle the cans on to the washer jet, with the No-Glug feature the neck of the can is made slightly narrower and longer, which makes gaining a good angle for washing very difficult indeed. The second problem with the No-Glug feature is that the hole through the handle doesn't seem to get enough water flow through it to properly rinse it out, potentially leaving chemical in the can.

Having said this the No-Glug feature is useful and does work very well enabling faster pouring of the cans, which as we all know as sprayer operators can make a lot of difference. I just think that maybe a little more research into the design and use of cans in general to aid the operator from the industry as a whole would be good.

Rodeo Used in desiccation of winter O.S.R. (July 29, 2013)

We have recently used rodeo to desiccate off some winter O.S.R. with Latch.
Product is a little ungainly in the standard 20 litre cans, the usual problems are attached with it, heavy cans, pouring can be a little gluggy and splashy if your not very careful.
Washing out isn't a problem with the rotating cleaning nozzle we have, if it does take a while.
Overall good product.

Pyramid My opinion (April 03, 2013)

Seeds were a good size to get through the vaderstadt drill. Went in in reasonable conditions and yielded well. Made grade for human consumption and won local farm group competition.

Cordiale My opinion (April 03, 2013)

One of our few wheats this year that got premium on milling. Even in this tricky year. Yielded well also. Sold well and a good wheat.
